A sign that sat above the House of Representatives chamber door that was gifted by President Abraham Lincoln is on its way back to the historic location Honest Abe chose for it. “In God We Trust,” the sign reads, in a stark reminder that America is a Christian Nation.
Nancy Pelosi had the sign removed in 2018, calling the message “antiquated” and unconstitutional. Congressional rules allow for the display of religious symbols as long as they don’t interfere with governing principles. Luckily, in this Christian nation, that would never happen. Spreading that message to millions and millions of citizens unsolicited would absolutely violate the 1st Amendment as well as the separation of church and state clause.
The sign has been on display at the Smithsonian since Pelosi had it removed, where it could be properly preserved for its historic value. Curator Joseph Barron says now that the sign is back in an uncontrolled space, it will likely fall apart within about five years. “That was the real reason we took it down,” said Pelosi, “some troll made up the other nonsense.”
McCarthy said if Pelosi wanted the sign down, it should be up. If it gets destroyed, “that’s what God intended.” The Smithsonian filed a motion with the Supreme Court to have the artifact returned but they turned the case over to the National Cathedral to decide since the government has no official province over the Almighty.
