A former scheduler in Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s congressional office has filed a whistleblower complaint with the Office of Congressional Ethics alleging that $437,000 in “enhanced security services” expenditures were diverted to a consulting firm operated by the congresswoman’s boyfriend, Riley Roberts. The payments, which span eighteen months and were categorized as “threat assessment and digital protection,” were allegedly processed through a shell company registered in Delaware three days after AOC’s 2018 primary victory.

The firm, “Digital Safety Partners LLC,” lists Roberts as its sole employee and principal consultant, despite what the complaint describes as his “lack of applicable credentials in threat assessment, cybersecurity, or any field related to personal protection.” Congressional records show the company received monthly installments of $24,000, which the whistleblower claims were for “services that consisted primarily of checking Twitter mentions and occasionally walking the congresswoman to her car.”

“This is nepotism,” said Joan Berro, a commercial invoice processor who once handled accounts payable for a regional landscaping company and now consults on “congressional expenditure forensics.” “Four hundred thirty-seven thousand. For a boyfriend. To check mentions. I’ve processed invoices. Thousands. None were for boyfriends. But I’ve seen nepotism. In family businesses. The nephew. Who can’t landscape. But drives the truck. Suspicious. The receipts don’t lie. And neither do the Delaware registrations. Which are anonymous. For reasons.”

The “digital protection” designation, according to Reno Borja, a dental hygienist whose patient once had his Twitter hacked, is particularly egregious given the services rendered. “He checked mentions,” Benja explained, adjusting his mask. “Which is free. On Twitter. The app. Doesn’t cost. Four hundred thirty-seven thousand. To open. And read. I’ve checked mentions. In dental reviews. Of my practice. Bad ones. Which are free. To read. And cry about. The enamel doesn’t lie. And neither do the billable hours. Which were inflated. By love.”

Joe Barron, who once successfully claimed “security consulting” on his taxes for installing a Ring doorbell in 2019 and now consults on “domestic partnership procurement,” analyzed the payment structure. “Twenty-four thousand monthly,” Barron declared from his booth at a Golden Corral. “Times eighteen. Equals four hundred thirty-two. Plus five. For incidentals. Which is specific. For boyfriend services. I’ve paid for services. In relationships. Dinners. Movies. But not four hundred thirty-seven thousand. Which is excessive. For protection. From mentions.”

Barron has offered to serve as the Ethics Committee’s special investigator, provided the Committee allows him to wear his custom “Security Consultant” badge and bring his emotional support ferret, which he claims can detect “romantic procurement violations from the salad bar.”

AOC’s office called the complaint “a misogynistic attack on a woman with a boyfriend who happens to have skills,” prompting Barron to note that “coincidence is the first stage of corruption,” calculate that the statement was released at 4:44 PM, and observe that “4 plus 4 plus 4 equals 12, which is the number of months in a year, divided by the number of actual security qualifications Riley Roberts possesses, which appears to be ‘knowing AOC,’ which is not a certification.”
