Florida Governor Ron DeSantis made it very clear with a chuckle: “I’m not about to challenge Donald Trump for the Republican nomination.” The popular politician says doing so would be nothing short of political suicide. “I’m backing him and you should too.”

Trump and DeSantis supporters alike cheered as they put the issue to bed. DeSantis may be the future, but Trump is the here and now. Rank and file RINOs are unhappy, of course, because they wanted to put the Trump controversies behind them. “That’s not a problem anymore,” said House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, “we’re going after Hunter Biden’s laptop.”

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, who lost ground in the midterms in his chamber, says he’d love to see Trump “sit down and shut up” so the party doesn’t have to splinter and die. “If 2022 was reversed and there was a blue wave, the party would have been obliterated.” He fears that’s what will happen in 2024.

Democrats who love to see the two men quarrel are also upset, though they’d rather campaign against Trump’s record of idiocy than DeSantis’ weaponization of Trumpist hate and hateful policy.”

“He’s the only reason I have a political career,” he said, “Without Trump, I’d just be another extremist on a school board burning books.”

It’s okay, Governor. We’ll wait patiently. Trump 2024. We suppose. God Bless America.
