The Coast Guard’s declassification of 900 pages of Vice Presidential travel logs from 2012 has revealed that then-Vice President Joe Biden once departed Air Force Two via a maintenance ladder at Dover Air Force Base while his wife Jill and son Hunter remained aboard the aircraft, continuing to their scheduled destination while Biden was evacuated in a single-engine Cessna 172 operated by the Coast Guard Auxiliary due to what the agency termed a “credible and specific threat to executive succession.”
The incident, which occurred during a routine domestic trip to Scranton in October 2012, was never publicly disclosed and does not appear in official Office of the Vice President logs. According to the newly released documents, the threat assessment—codenamed “OPERATION AMTRAK”—suggested that “hostile elements” had obtained the Vice President’s itinerary, prompting the Secret Service to implement “asymmetric family separation protocols” that left Jill and Hunter as “operational decoys” while Biden evacuated via what agents called “the smallest plane available.”
