The payments, according to documents obtained by independent researchers, were wired through a network of shell corporations over eighteen months, beginning shortly after both lawmakers voted to impeach President Trump and continuing through their service on the January 6th Committee. The total amount: $12.5 million each, for a combined $25 million, transferred in increments designed to look like “book advances” and “consulting fees.”

“People think they did this out of principle,” said Dave, a delivery driver who once brought a package to the Capitol Hill Club and who has since become an expert in political finance through Telegram channels. “But that’s naïve. They wanted it. There’s a difference. Needing money is poor. Wanting money is human. Soros understands this. He has needs too. Specifically, the need to destroy America by funding moderate Republicans who believe in institutional norms. It’s diabolical.”

Cheney and Kinzinger have not responded to requests for comment, which Barron says is “exactly what someone who took Soros money would do.” He is currently preparing a follow-up report alleging that the January 6th Committee itself was funded by “Soros Bucks,” a cryptocurrency he invented for the purposes of the investigation.
